Born in Argentina, educated in Denmark and the United States, Erik Speyer has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to his art. His earlier professional responsibilities as a Navy pilot and director first of Planet Ocean Science Center and then the Miami Museum of Science allowed time for painting on weekends and vacations. During those years he had numerous exhibits. About the Paintings Until 1997, Speyer worked exclusively in watercolors. Since then he began to paint in oils, both in the studio and en plein air. Throughout his long artistic career, he has explored landscape and maritime themes from Mystic to New Mexico. Early in his career as a self-taught artist, Speyer discovered that the best way to learn to master the techniques of watercolors was to paint outdoors, en plein air. He became a regular on the Miami River and has continued to paint plein air in oils in such diverse places as Monhegan Island in Maine, the northern coast of California, Guanajuato, Mexico, Vietnam, France and, closer to home, the Everglades, central Florida, Key West and Coconut Grove.
