As a contemporary female landscape painter, I wish to absorb nature into myself and record this in my paintings. This stirring and particularly my awareness of spirituality in the landscape is what its beauty brings to me. I chose to express myself in painting perceptually through movement and color.
This Pennsylvania artist and writer was raised in the part of the United States that produced poets such as Whitman, Emerson, and Thoreau. Shirlee Cuozzo- Rainey spent her youth hiking the same trails Whitman writes about. She feels a great sensibility in here work bu the deeply rooted in nature.
Shirlee did not create art in youth as many artists did. She studied interior design at the university of Georgia. She studied painting at Florida International University and received a BFA in painting and a MS in Art Education. She studied at The New York Studio School of Painting, Drawing and Sculpture, an atelier in New York City with Mercedes Matter and Graham Nickson as well as ateliers with Greg Amenoff and David Chang in Florida.
Cuozzo-Rainey has exhibited extensively. One of the highlights of her career was an exhibition with her son, Cullen, “My Only Begotten Son and Me”.
Shirlee has recently finished a book, “Seeds of Love Produce a Bumper Crop”, which she also illustrated. The book takes place in a small lake community called Eagles Mere in Pennsylvania where many of her paintings were made.
She has taught at Miami Dade Community College’s Visual Art Department at the Kendall Campus in Miami, Florida.
